It later became the national gemstone of Russia. The name "alexandrite" became official in 1842.Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl. It contains both beryllium and chromium. It is the chromium that accounts for the spectacular color change. The color change is the primary qualification for a chrysoberyl to be considered alexandrite. Alexandrite is strongly trichroic. Its color change results in a near-equal transmission of the blue-green and red portions of the spectrum, coupled with strong absorption in the yellow.
