1926-S $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin NGC Graded MS65. Despite the mintage of more than 2 million coins, the 1926-S is scarce in all grades, and rare in Gem or finer grades. Specialists in the Saint-Gaudens series are well aware of the gold meltings that occurred in the late 1930s after gold coinage was recalled earlier in that decade. Unlike Philadelphia issues that were exported prior to the depression, most branch mint issues remained in domestic hands. While the certified survival rate of 1926 P-Mint double eagles is about one in 17, the rate for D and S-Mint examples that year is one in 1,400. This splendid Gem exhibits distinctive rose and green toning over its frosty and brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with bold design motifs. A splash of darker toning at the I in LIBERTY and a similar line on the wing will identify this piece. NGC Certified.
