The 1895 holds a special place in the Morgan dollar series. The story goes that 12,000 circulation strikes were coined but never released, likely melted under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918. Some researchers have also speculated that the recorded mintage was a clerical error and that no business strikes were ever produced. Either way, the 1895 is a monumental rarity known today only in proof format. A total of 880 pieces were struck, and all survivors are highly sought-after, from impaired and circulated specimens to the best-preserved Deep Cameo representatives. This richly toned PR62 dollar displays violet, gold, and blue-green iridescence over faintly hairlined surfaces. The fields maintain a degree of flash that collectors will enjoy. PCGS Graded.
