One 1895 $1 Morgan Silver Dollar Proof Coin NGC Graded PR62 with Amazing Color. A lovely example of the famous 1895 proof rarity. From a close perspective the 1895 Proof Morgan Dollar is not much rarer than the other Proof Morgan's from the 1890's. The 1895 Proof had a well-known mintage of 880 Proof coins which in comparison to the other 1890s Morgan's isn't especially rare. The reason that this coin is considered one of the most elusive and rare of the Morgan Silver Dollar Series is because the lack of their counterparts, the 12,000 business strike Morgan's that have never been seen. Today, every known example is a proof, including those pieces that show evidence of circulation. Numismatists have often speculated about the possible existence of any non-proof 1895 Morgan dollars from Philadelphia. Bowers, in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, A Complete Encyclopedia (1993), quoted the traditional mintage figure of 12,000 business strikes for this date, although he noted: "I have never seen an authentic specimen. It is presumed that the entire mintage, if indeed it ever existed, consisting of only 12 mint bags, went to the melting pot under the provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918." Bowers later went on to say in The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, to say "In 1895, at the Philadelphia Mint, there was no coinage of silver dollars for circulation." If you are looking for a relatively affordable coin from this highly sought after rarity, then don't miss your opportunity to own this gorgeous coin. NGC Certified.
