One 1852 $50 '887' Thousand Gold Slug Moffat & Co. Ingot. Although these were officially reffered to as "ingots" these famous fifty dollar pieces were often reffered to as "slugs", they were produced during the early Gold Rush years of 1850-1853 in San Francisco and had only slight variations throughout. This "slug" was issued by "The United Assay office ofr Gold" and this particular example was from one of the later issues struck after the reorganization of the Moffat & Company, a successfull firm that later evolved into the first U.S. Mint in San Francisco. This "slug" displays moderate wear and bumps from its time in circulation but is still a great example of this highly collectible, rare ingot, and would certainly make a great addition to any collection. 1852 $50 moffat .887 moffat enjoyed the highest reputation of all California private mints. The federal government asked the 2 surviving members of the firm to initiate the San Fransisco mint. In 1851 and 1852 the united states assay office under moffat & co. with Augustus Humbert produced the $50 "slugs" probably less than 50 survive in all grades.
