By 8pm on September 12th, about 160 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, the ship had sunk losing its passengers, crew, and treasure to the bottom of the sea, not to be seen again for nearly 130 years. In 1857 the sunken treasure was worth an estimated $2 million, or $300 million today! Collecting shipwreck gold has always been desirable amongst collectors because they are increasingly rare. Of the thousands of ships that have sunk, few have been recovered and even fewer were carrying gold coins and nuggets of this caliber.
